Five reasons to study fine arts in the UK
Express yourself and your ideas
Fine Art at UCA is all about trying everything and having the space to do so. You’ll explore personal experiences, culture and social issues in a meaningful way.
Develop your creative and artistic skills
You’ll benefit from studying at a creative university, with access to all facilities to help you build strong skills in painting, sculpture, photography, body art, digital art and more.
Build an art portfolio that gets you noticed
From the very start, you’ll be creating work for your professional portfolio. By your final year, you’ll complete a major project that showcases your personal style, creativity and career ambitions: perfect for job applications or freelance work.
Learn to think creatively and critically
You won’t just make art, you’ll learn how to analyse, interpret and communicate ideas visually. These problem-solving and critical thinking skills are useful in many carers, not just art.
Be part of a creative community
Join, collaborate and build your future within UCA’s creative community. You’ll meet creatives from all backgrounds and experiences and create long-lasting friendships.
What do our fine art students say?
One of our Fine Art students, Lie, shared his experience studying at UCA:
Lie was always passionate about fine art, so it was pretty certain that he was going to pursue his passion at university. But whatever Lie’s expectations were, his experience at UCA turned out to be something altogether surprising:
“At UCA, you get to be an artist but also understand the world that surrounds your art. I’ve shown my work internally and externally, but i’ve also managed auctions. I’ve always loved creating art, but now i’ve fallen in love with all the behind-the-scenes stuff too.”
Fine Art at UCA is, first and foremost, a place for you to practice your creative expression. But part of that is to be tested, pushed, challenged – new perspectives is where new ideas come from:
“I wasn’t expecting to be critically engaged. I’ve loved the theory, the course is much more intellectually stimulating than I expected. I’m really well rounded, but also know my niche. I can do whatever I want.
“Would you expect to do mig welding and angle grinding on a fine art course? Me neither – but it’s been such a blast. So much fun.”
It’s this sense of freedom and fun that runs throughout Lie’s experience, where learning crucial skills doesn’t feel like learning at all:
“I feel like my degree is in playing. I’m currently spending my time between the woodwork shop, to build a timber rowboat, and the ceramics studio, to make the barnacles.”
At a university with over a century of history in art, you can immerse yourself within the whole spectrum of creativity. And if you come out of that wanting to be something other than an artist, UCA supports you in taking your dream in a new direction:
“Originally, I wanted to be (and just assumed I’d be) a freelance artist. Now I know i’ve got so much more potential, I’m more of a people-person than I thought. I’m looking into galleries that I can work in, to work on the marketing side of things, or perhaps stewarding to show guests art. I’ve loved my experience in that, I’m more than an artist.”
UCA trains creatives. However you want to use that creativity, and whatever direction you want to go in, here you’ve got the time, the space, and the guidance to make that happen.
